Decided by the Press Ombudsman

The Press Ombudsman has decided that an offer made by the Irish Sun was sufficient to resolve a complaint by a woman about a breach of Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazine. Complaints about the article under Principle 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment), Principle 4 (Respect for Rights) and Principle 5 (Privacy) were not upheld.

The Press Ombudsman has decided not to uphold a complaint that a restaurant review published in the Evening Herald on 1 June 2012 was in breach of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided to uphold a complaint by Mrs Susanna Grimes that an article in the Irish Mail on Sunday on 19 August 2012   was in breach of Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.  The breach of Principle 1 because there was insufficient evidence that it strove for truth and accuracy,  and of Principle 4 because there was insufficient evidence that it had taken reasonable care in checking facts before publication.

The Press Ombudsman has decided to uphold a complaint by Ms Cherie Eustace that the publication of a photograph of her three year old daughter by the Irish Daily Star was in breach of Principle 9.2 (Children) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided to uphold a complaint made on behalf of the Clerk of Dáil Eireann, Mr Kieran Coughlan, that an article in the Irish Mail on Sunday on 6 May 2012 was in breach of Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided that there is insufficient evidence to allow him to make a decision on a complaint by Ms Anna Fox that a statement in an article published in the Evening Herald on 10 March last breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided to uphold a complaint by Marriage Equality and BelongTo Youth Services that an article in the Irish Independent on 14 March 2012 was in breach of Principle 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.  He also decided to uphold a complaint about the same article under Principle 8 (Prejudice) of the Code.

The Press Ombudsman has decided to uphold a complaint by Mr Bev Cotton that an article in the Irish Examiner on 6 February 2012 was in breach of Principle 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided The Irish Times took sufficient remedial action to resolve a complaint made by Mr Patrick Kelly that an article published on 10 May last breached Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and 7 (Court Reporting) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided The Irish Times took sufficient remedial action to resolve a complaint made by Mr Patrick Kelly that an article published on 25 June breached Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and 7 (Court Reporting) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.
