Decided by the Press Ombudsman

The Press Ombudsman has decided that the actions taken, and offered to be taken, by The Irish Times in response to a complaint by Mr Michael Smith, Editor, Village Magazine, about a court report published on 8 October 2013, was sufficient remedial action on its part to resolve a complaint made under Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and Principle 7 (Court Reporting) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.  Other parts of the complaint were not upheld.

The Press Ombudsman has decided not to uphold a complaint by a man that an article about him in the Sunday World was in breach of Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided not to uphold a complaint by Dr David Abrahamson that an article published in The Irish Times on l6 January 2014 was in breach of Principle 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided to uphold a complaint by Ryanair about the Irish Daily Mail under Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines on the grounds that the article concerned was significantly distorted.

The Press Ombudsman decided that an article published in the Irish Mail on Sunday on 23 February 2014 was significantly misleading and, in that respect, a breach of Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.   

The Press Ombudsman has decided that the Limerick Leader made an offer of sufficient remedial action to resolve a complaint by Mr Concubhar Ó Liatháin that an article published on 23 February 2014 was in breach of Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided that The Irish Times offered to take sufficient remedial action to resolve a complaint by Mr Patrick McKillen, made through his solicitors, that an article published in The Irish Times on 23 December 2013 was in breach of Principle  2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) of the Code of Practice.   A complaint that the article breached Principle 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code was not upheld.

The Press Ombudsman has decided to uphold a complaint by Mr John Perry TD, Minister of State for Small Business, made through his solicitors, that an article published in the Irish Mail on Sunday on 11 August 2013 was in breach of Principle 1 of the Code of Practice.  

The Press Ombudsman has decided not to uphold a complaint by Mr John Perry TD, Minister of State for Small Business, made through his solicitors, that an article in the Irish Mail on Sunday on 16 April 2014, about his mileage expenses was in breach of Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided to uphold a complaint by Mr Daniel Tarrant, made through his solicitors, that references to court proceedings in an article about him in The   Herald on 25 June 2013 were significantly misleading and, in that respect, a breach of Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and 7 (Court Reporting) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.
