1. Publication of a decision by the Press Ombudsman should include the logo of the Press Ombudsman, and publication of a decision by the Press Council on an appeal should include the joint logo of the Press Council and the Press Ombudsman.
2. Publication of a decision of the Press Council on a complaint referred to it by the Press Ombudsman should include the logo of the Press Council of Ireland.
3. Those sections of decisions of the Press Ombudsman upholding a complaint should be published: (a) in full; (b) promptly; (c) on the same page as the original article, or further forward, subject to the exception at (6) below; (d) on the same day of the week as the original publication, (e) with similar prominence; (f) unedited; and (g) without editorial commentary by way of a headline or otherwise. In addition, each should carry, above the headline, a strap-line indicating that it is a decision of the Press Ombudsman.
4. Those sections of decisions of the Press Council upholding complaints referred to it by the Press Ombudsman should be published as in (3) above. This also applies to successful appeals by complainants against decisions of the Press Ombudsman, and to unsuccessful appeals by publications against decisions of the Press Ombudsman.
5. Publication of those sections of decisions of either the Press Ombudsman or Press Council that relate either to complaints that have not been upheld, or to successful appeals by publications against decisions by the Press Ombudsman, is at the discretion of the editor concerned. However, where such decisions are published they must comply with 3 (a), (f) and (g) above. If they are not published, readers should be notified that part of the complaint was not upheld, or that the publication successfully appealed part of the decision (whichever is appropriate) and that the full decision can be accessed at www.presscouncil.ie or www.pressombudsman.ie.
6. Where a complaint has been upheld in relation to an article published on the front page of a publication, the decision should be published with due prominence on one of the first four editorial pages.
7. A pdf of the page on which any decision is published should be emailed to chairman@presscouncil.ie
8. Subsequent articles about and coverage of decisions of the Press Ombudsman or the Press Council, in publications other than those which have been involved in the decisions concerned, should be written and presented with fairness to all concerned in the spirit of the Code of Practice.
